The most popular nail polish shades of Fall 2022

Just like for summer, I wanted to do a round-up of the most popular shades of the season. I took the same approach as I did for summer, and composed a top 5 of my most pinned single-color shades from September 22 until December 21. I’ve decided to use the Pinterest data because it seems to be the most objective (while Instagram definitely favors ‘fresh’ content for example). It’s not foolproof, but it gives a nice mix of old and new shades.

There is a bit of overlap with the most popular for summer, but this is to be expected since some shades just continue to be popular. With most of the shades in the list, I can understand why they are popular for fall, and I will say, it is just a nice selection of shades and it was fun to revisit them. You might notice that none of the shades released for fall 2022 made it to the top list. That’s because Essie never released their fall 2022 collection over here, and I did not purchase the OPI Fall 2022 simply because I already had too many other shades to wear and not much time for swatching.

5. Essie Sk8 with destiny

It’s probably good to mention that Sk8 with destiny almost made it to my top summer colors too (it was definitely in the top 10). This color just gained a bit of popularity during fall and did make it into the top 5 this time. This is the only color that is not a ‘typical’ fall shade, but it’s just a very nice shade in general and I can see why it’s so popular.

The last time I wore it, I only had to use two coats for opacity, but this time I definitely needed three. It’s not the one-coater Essie claims these Expressie shades are, but the color is so pretty that it’s worth the extra effort.

4. OPI I’m really an actress

I won’t lie, I was very excited when I realized OPI I’m really an actress made it into the top 5 for fall. This shade mostly became popular towards the end of November/December. I realized that people were already pinning it for Christmas! Since this shade was originally released for spring, it did not even cross my mind but it’s indeed an amazing holiday shade. I’m really an actress was originally released for Spring 2021, but made it into OPI’s permanent collection, and I’m very happy to see this.

I’m really an actress has a very strong gold shimmer in the bottle, that doesn’t really translate to the nail. It also has a gorgeous scattered holographic sparkle, which makes it look amazing in direct lighting. The shade is super opaque, and you’re looking at two coats. I always thought of this shade as red, but wearing it a second time made me realize it has quite a strong pink undertone!

3. OPI Less is Norse

Again, I was also very excited that OPI Less is Norse made it into my top 5 for fall. Simply, because it meant that I was able to swatch it again. Less is Norse was originally released for OPI’s Iceland fall 2017 collection, but has become part of OPI’s core collection. The last time I wore it was in 2019, so it was definitely about time I wore it again. I hadn’t forgotten about this shade, because almost every year around fall it becomes very popular on Pinterest! I thought it would maybe be over by now, but nope, here it was again!

All I want to say is that Less is Norse just deserves it. It’s just an amazing blue-grey with a great formula. You’re seeing two coats in the picture above, but I almost could have gotten away with one coat. It’s also reasonably unique because I haven’t found an exact dupe in my stash!

2. OPI Heart and con-soul

OPI Heart and con-soul did great this fall! It went from place 4 for summer to an incredible place 2. I was already surprised that it did so well for summer, but I’m even more surprised it does so well for fall. My guess is that, similar to OPI I’m really an actress, a lot of people were pinning it for the holidays. That’s the only reason I’ve got because I didn’t even find it the most amazing shade of OPI’s Xbox collection.

The formula of Heart and con-soul is a bit on the sheer side. I’m wearing three coats in the picture above, and you still see my natural nail line peeping through. It’s a pretty shimmer though, I’ll give it that!

1. Essie Win me over

Essie Win me over also stood at number 1 in my summer top 5. It is probably good to mention that this shade especially became popular towards the end of summer, so it was probably people already preparing for fall and it just continued to be popular during fall. It was released in the summer of 2021, but already back then people said it would be an amazing fall color. I think part of the reason this shade is so popular, is that besides the pretty color, it is also relatively easy to get your hands on since Essie added it to the core collection. I can’t say too many times how much I love this shade.

Essie calls it a khaki green on their website, and it’s a perfect description. Also, the formula of Win me over is amazing, since it’s almost opaque in one coat. I’m wearing two in the picture above.

Conclusion

It was super fun to do this top 5 again. I kind of expected all these warm, autumn colors to be popular, but it’s actually a nice mix of pastels, moody shades, and sparkles. It’s also very well-balanced between Essie and OPI!

As I’ve said before, I will try to keep doing this every quarter, because it’s just fun to see which shades become popular.
